August 2013 Proven Athlete - Ally C.08.05.2013

1. When did you start training at CrossFit Milwaukee?

I finished OnRamp in December 2012 and starting attending regularly in January 2013.

2. How did you find out about our gym and what motivated you to start our style of training?

I’ve been a more serious distance runner and triathlete for the past five years, constantly training for the next race. Last summer I trained for a full marathon, two half marathons, and a half Ironman triathlon and I was burnt out. I wanted to try something different. My boss’s boyfriend owns a CrossFit gym in Gurnee, IL. They invited me to come and try a workout there and I was hooked after my first visit there! Once I was finished with my race season, I took some time off and then started looking for CrossFit gyms in the area, which led me to CFM.

3. Twice in the past couple of weeks you've been called 'buff' by people you know. Can you describe the circumstances around those comments? How does being a 'buff' woman make you feel?

The first time was when I was wedding dress shopping with my aforementioned boss, who is also the maid of honor in my wedding. I tried on my dress and she said, “You are the buffest bride I know!” That felt awesome to hear! Knowing that all I needed to do to prep for my wedding would be to maintain my regular CrossFit routine was a relief, considering brides are always bombarded with ridiculous pre-wedding workout routines that probably show little result compared to what I get going two or three times a week to CrossFit.

The second time was when I was at work. I am the GM of a children’s creative arts center in Brookfield. There was a bag of unmixed cement left over from an art project that nobody else could pick up to take to the dumpster. I was easily able to pick it up and haul it away! (About a 50-pound bag.) My co-worker said, “You’re so buff! Of course you can lift that!” This showed me how CrossFit has helped me change my perception of myself and women who lift. Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I need to wait for a guy to help me with the heavy stuff. That’s a huge confidence lifter as a woman!

4. Besides the buffness, what other changes have you noticed as a result of your hard work?

CrossFit has changed my idea of what it means to be fit. Every WOD challenges me physically and mentally. There are some days when I walk in, look at the whiteboard and think, I can’t do that. But I’ve completed every WOD I’ve ever faced! CrossFit has tremendously changed my idea of what I can physically do.

5. What fitness goals have you set for yourself in the future?

love setting goals at CrossFit! It’s a great motivator to have that focus. There’s always something I can be working and improving on. Beyond CrossFit, I would love to improve my half marathon times and complete another half Ironman next summer.

6. Do you have a favorite benchmark workout? If so, what is it? What about a favorite lift?

My favorite benchmarks are Helen and Annie. My favorite lift is the deadlift. When I used to lift at my old gym, my max deadlift was 60 pounds. And that was after a year of lifting! Two months at CFM and I could already deadlift twice that amount. To me, the deadlift is such a confidence builder!

7. One
of the common fears that women have when approaching barbell training is the fear of getting too muscular? Do you feel this has happened to you? What would you say to these women who cringe at the thought of barbell training?

I definitely felt that way when I started at CFM. I thought, if I start getting too bulky, I’ll cut back. But, the confidence and accomplishment you feel when you continuously improve at CrossFit erases any of those fears. CFM has not only made me strong physically, but also mentally. I can do so much more at the gym than I ever thought I could! My opinion of how I want my body to look has changed drastically since I started at CFM. I would take the body that allows me to lift a bag of cement and out perform most of the guys at my old gym than a toothpick who needs to spend hours every week on the spin bike! I would hope other women would agree!

8. Anything else you want to add?

Thanks for picking me as the proven athlete for this month! It is a big honor!
